Online Marketplace Used Car Scams & How to Avoid Them

Online marketplaces and social selling platforms have made it easier than ever to find used cars. With so many listings around Auckland it’s worth knowing what to look out for so you can buy with confidence and avoid some common traps.

Common Online Car Scams

1. Fake / Non-Existent Vehicles

These listings often feature very low prices, vague descriptions, or stock photos pulled from other websites. Scammers may claim the car needs to be sold urgently due to a move, divorce, or financial pressure.

Red flags to watch for:

  • The seller avoids meeting in person or keeps delaying viewings
  • Requests for payment, deposits, or “shipping fees” before you’ve seen the car
  • Excuses about why the car can’t be inspected locally
  • If the car can’t be viewed and test-driven, it’s safest to walk away.

2. Impersonated or Fake Seller Profiles

Some scammers create fake profiles or take over real ones to appear trustworthy. They may pose as private sellers, family members selling on someone’s behalf, or even businesses

Red flags to watch for:

  • Recently created profiles with little or no activity
  • Refusal to provide ID, contact details, or a physical address
  • Inconsistent information about the car or ownership

A genuine seller should be happy to answer questions and verify who they are.

3. “Out of Town” or Shipping Stories

A common tactic is claiming the car is located elsewhere (often overseas) and will be delivered once payment is made. These stories are designed to rush buyers into acting before they can think it through.

Red flags to watch for:

  • Pressure to pay quickly to “secure” the vehicle
  • Requests for payment through non-traceable methods
  • Claims that viewing the car isn’t possible before payment
  • Legitimate sellers don’t need upfront payments just for you to see a car.

Claims that the car is overseas or will be delivered after payment are common tactics. Pressure to pay upfront is a strong reason to walk away.

4. Cars With Money Owing or Stolen Vehicles

Not all scams involve fake cars – some involve real vehicles that come with hidden problems. A car may still have finance owing or may not legally belong to the seller.

Why this matters:

  • Outstanding finance can become the buyer’s responsibility
  • Stolen vehicles can be seized, even after purchase
  • Always check the vehicle’s ownership and finance status before handing over any money.

5. Deposit or Holding Fee Scams

Scammers may ask for a deposit to “hold” a car, especially if there’s claimed high interest. Once the money is sent, the seller disappears.

A safer approach:

  • View the vehicle first, confirm the details, and only discuss payment once you’re confident everything checks out.

Buying Through a Licensed Dealer: What It Can Help With

Buying privately can work well, but it does come with more responsibility on the buyer. One reason some people choose to buy through a licensed dealer is to reduce a few of the unknowns.

Licensed dealers are required to:

  • Be registered motor vehicle traders
  • Sell vehicles with clear ownership and no finance owing
  • Provide consumer protections that don’t apply to private sales

Many dealers can also help with things like vehicle checks, optional warranties, finance, and trade-ins, which can simplify the process – especially if you’re short on time or don’t want to manage everything yourself.

At Budget Car Sales, we keep things easy. You can ask questions, take your time with a test drive, and chat through your options. No pressure, no hard sell! We just want you to know what you’re buying and feel good about it.

Online marketplaces can be convenient, but taking a little extra care can save a lot of stress later. If you prefer to see a car in person and know exactly what you’re buying, you’re welcome to visit us at our Manukau or Takanini yards and talk through your options with our team.
