No Credit History? Walang Problema: A Filipino’s Guide to Car Finance in NZ

Bagong dating ka sa New Zealand? This one’s for you. Whether you just landed or you’ve been here a few years, getting your first car loan without a credit history can feel impossible. Pero hindi siya impossible. Here’s the truth.

One of the biggest worries for Filipino migrants (and new arrivals from anywhere) is the question of credit history. Back home in the Philippines, you might have had a great track record with loans or credit cards. But in New Zealand? You’re starting from zero.

The good news: you don’t need a perfect NZ credit history to drive away in a great car. At Budget Car Sales, we’ve got over 300 vehicles in stock. There are plenty of tidy, great-looking cars for those who like to arrive in style, as well as spacious SUVs, people movers, and vans that are perfect for bigger families. We’ve helped hundreds of new arrivals, including a lot of Pinoys right here in South Auckland, get on the road with our EasyFinance options, including zero deposit deals.

Why credit history feels like a barrier

When lenders assess a car finance application, they want to know: will this person pay us back? In NZ, they usually answer that question by checking your credit file with agencies like Centrix or Equifax.

If you’re new to NZ, your file is basically blank. No credit cards, no mortgages, no payment history. To some lenders, a blank file looks the same as a bad file, and that’s where a lot of people get stuck.

But here’s what those lenders miss: a blank file isn’t the same as a bad one. It just means you haven’t had the chance to build one yet.

What lenders actually look at instead

If you don’t have a credit history, a good finance team (like ours) will look at other things to assess your application:

1. Your income and employment

A stable job, even a new one, goes a long way. Nurses, caregivers, hospitality workers, construction workers: all of these count. We’ll ask for recent payslips to confirm your income.

2. Bank statements

Three months of bank statements showing regular income and responsible spending tells a strong story, even without a formal credit file.

3. Proof of address and visa status

We need to know you’re settled in NZ. Most work visas and resident visas are absolutely fine for financing a car.

4. A deposit (if you have one)

A deposit reduces the lender’s risk and can make approval much easier. But we also have zero deposit options, so it’s not a must.

What documents do you need?

To apply for EasyFinance at Budget Car Sales, you’ll generally need:

  • Valid passport or NZ driver’s licence
  • Proof of your visa (if applicable)
  • Proof of NZ address (a utility bill or tenancy agreement)
  • 3 months of bank statements
  • 2–3 recent payslips
  • A NZ contact number

That’s it. No need for a long NZ credit history. No need for a guarantor in most cases. Just honest documentation that shows you can manage the repayments.

Can you finance a car on a work visa?

Yes, in most cases. The key is that your visa gives you enough time remaining to cover the loan term, or that you have a pathway to residency. Common visas that work include the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV), the Skilled Migrant Category, and resident visas.

Not sure if your visa qualifies? Just ask us. We’ll give you a straight answer, no runaround.

How to start building your NZ credit history

Once you’re in a car and making repayments on time, you’re actually building your credit history with every payment. Within 12–18 months of consistent payments, you’ll have a solid NZ credit file that opens doors to other things, like a home loan down the track.

So your first car finance isn’t just about getting a car. Para sa maraming Pinoy dito, it’s the first step toward building your financial life in New Zealand.

Zero deposit options: what’s the catch?

No catch. Zero deposit finance does usually mean slightly higher weekly repayments, since you’re borrowing the full amount. If you can put something down (even $500–$1,000), it helps. But if you’re starting fresh and need a car to get to work, zero deposit is a real and legitimate option.

Our EasyFinance calculator on the website lets you play with deposit amounts and loan terms to find a weekly repayment that fits your budget, before you even step on the lot.
